#MAC EMULATOR ARM FOR MAC#
But there’s more to come that could improve the transition from Intel to Apple silicon for Mac users-like a virtualization app that would let us launch 10.15 Catalina or previous Intel-only versions of macOS, or Intel flavors of Windows, Linux, and other operating systems.

Virtualization lets Apple (and other companies) keep older operating systems alive for a while, or even indefinitely, by creating a bubble in which older code can run natively, without realizing it’s not controlling a hardware computer.Īpple’s latest entrant in the emulation field is Rosetta 2, which enables Intel-based apps to run on Apple’s M1 chips. Emulation lets a computer run code intended for a different CPU, like a Mac with an Intel processor running code written for a Motorola chip. Over the decades, Apple has managed several successful processor and operating system migrations with a combination of emulation and virtualization.

To open the Intel-based version of an app on Macs with ARM:

For example, maybe the Intel version has a feature not currently offered on the other version, or there are third-party software or hardware limitations that you can only avoid by going with the x86-64 version. In rare instances, however, you might need the Intel version of an app. Because of this, apps with a universal version installed will run this version on Apple silicon Macs by default. Apps designed to run natively with Apple silicon chips provide a better process overall.

In most cases, it's preferred to run universal apps on Apple silicon machines since Intel-based versions must rely on Rosetta 2.

What if you need to use the Intel version? Review the list of apps on the top right, noting the different kinds of apps under the Kind column: Apple silicon, Universal, Intel, iOS, or other.
